2024 Head Old Vine Grenache

Head
Juicy Barossa Valley Grenache from ancient vines planted in the 1940s, 1880s and 1858, delivering vibrant raspberry and red fruit flavours with fresh peppery tannins and a lively finish under screwpull closure.

The 2024 Head Old Vine Grenache is a vibrant Barossa red from ancient dry-grown vines, including a backbone from the 1940s Trial Hill site in Pewsey Vale at 480m altitude, blended with fruit from the 1880s Riebke vineyard in Ebenezer and the 1858 Stonegarden in Springton. Crafted in the traditional Barossan table wine style to honour the Old Vine Charter, it features 10% whole bunch ferment, minimal intervention, and 11 months maturation in neutral French oak puncheons, bottled unfined and unfiltered under screwpull closure at 14.2% alcohol. Expect juicy raspberry, musky plum, stone fruit, and vanilla flavours with fresh peppery grip, fine chalky tannins, and a lively, cool finish—slurpy and primary now, yet with strong structure for cellaring from 2027–2036. 94 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.

Food Pairing
Vibrant crimson hue. Aromas of juicy raspberry, apricot, mint, and redcurrant jelly leap from the glass. The palate is slurpy and primary, offering ample raspberry, musky plum, stone fruit, and vanilla flavours, with a light peppery grip to tannins, chalky texture, and a cool, lively freshness. Barely medium-bodied with sweet, textural red fruits and lingering, mouthwatering tannins.
Producer Profile
In 2024, under La Niña’s milder conditions, we sourced the backbone from a new dry-grown Grenache site on Trial Hill (Pewsey Vale) at 480m altitude, planted in the 1940s. Blended with fruit from Mattschoss (1940s vines) and Riebke (1950s vines) in Ebenezer. Wild-fermented in old oak with minimal intervention—no fining, no filtration—for pure expression of old-vine character. Best enjoyed from 2027–2036. 14.2% alc.
